DEFINITION: A location recce is a pre-production document used to assess and record the suitability, practicality, and safety of a filming location before shooting begins.

A location recce can be used alongside a script (to check if the location matches the story requirements), storyboard (to see if planned shots are possible at the site) or a shot List (to confirm technical needs like camera placement, power and space)
KEY FEATURES:
- Visual Suitability – does the location match the look, mood and needs of the script/storyboard?
- Technical Checks – lighting (natural/artificial), sound levels, space for cameras/equipment, power access.
- Logistics – accessibility, parking, toilets, holding areas, catering nearby.
- Permissions – who owns/controls the location, permits required
- Health & Safety – hazards (traffic, water, weather, uneven ground), emergency access, risk assessment notes.
- Photos & Notes – images and written observations for reference in planning.
- Practical Info – address, contact details, recce date/time, best times for filming.
