Microphones, Milestones and a Little Ted Lasso Magic: My First Half-Term Highlights.

Well, we made it! The first half-term of the school year is officially in the bag and what a whirlwind it has been. It feels like only yesterday I was organising my classroom, admiring my new stationery and convincing myself that this would be the year I stayed on top of absolutely everything.

Spoiler alert: the to-do list is still growing, the sweet baked goods consumption has increased but the enthusiasm is very much still there.

As we approach a well-earned half-term break, I thought I'd take a moment to reflect on some of the highlights from the past few weeks. Because amongst the deadlines, lesson planning and endless emails, there have been some genuinely brilliant moments worth celebrating.

Lights, Camera... Podcast!

One of the most exciting developments this half-term has been getting our school podcast up and running. As a Media teacher, there is something incredibly satisfying about taking the skills we discuss in lessons and turning them into something real. Podcasting provides such a fantastic opportunity for students to find their voices, develop confidence and experience what goes into creating media content for an actual audience.

Of course, setting up a podcast also means thinking about microphones, recording spaces, editing software and approximately a million other little details. Nothing quite says Media teacher like getting excited about audio levels and sound quality.

But that is part of the fun. I'm really looking forward to seeing where this project goes, hearing the students' ideas and watching them take ownership of something creative.

Who knows? We might have the next big broadcasting stars sitting in our classrooms.

Never Stop Learning: My NPQLTD Adventure

Another personal highlight has been finding out that I've been accepted onto the National Professional Qualification in Leading Teacher Development (NPQLTD) course.

I'm genuinely excited about this opportunity. As teachers, we spend so much time encouraging our students to challenge themselves, learn new skills and step outside their comfort zones. Sometimes it's important to take our own advice.

Professional development has always been something I value, particularly when it opens up opportunities to collaborate with other educators, share ideas and reflect on what makes great teaching. I'm looking forward to developing my understanding of how we can support and inspire other teachers, as well as hopefully bringing some fresh ideas back into my own practice. Am I slightly questioning where I'm going to find the extra hours in the week? Absolutely. Am I excited anyway? Also absolutely.

New Faces, Fresh Starts and Media Magic

One of my favourite things about September is meeting new students.

There's something special about those first few lessons when you're getting to know a new group, discovering their personalities and finding out what makes them tick.

As a Media teacher, I particularly love hearing what students are watching, listening to, playing and scrolling through. Their media worlds are constantly changing, and those conversations are often a brilliant reminder of why our subject is so relevant.

It's also a joy introducing students to the idea that Media Studies is about so much more than watching films or analysing adverts. It's about understanding the world around us, asking questions, challenging representations and recognising the power of storytelling.

There have already been some fantastic conversations, plenty of laughter and those lovely moments when you can see a student starting to make connections.

Those moments never get old.

Spreading the Stationery Love

Now, it wouldn't be a proper half-term reflection without mentioning one of life's greatest joys: stationery.

If you know me, you'll know that a good notebook, a colourful pen or a particularly satisfying highlighter can bring an unreasonable amount of happiness. And even better than buying lovely stationery? Sharing it with other teachers.

This half-term, I've loved spreading a little stationery happiness through the resources available on my website.

First up, my Exit Slides resource, which is all about making those final few minutes of a lesson purposeful, engaging and easy to manage. We all know how quickly the end of a lesson can creep up on us, so having something ready to help students reflect on their learning is a little win worth celebrating!

And then there's my Weekly Notepad because who doesn't love the feeling of starting a fresh week with a lovely new page, an organised to-do list and the satisfaction of ticking things off throughout the week?

There's something really lovely about creating resources that make teachers' lives just that little bit easier (and prettier). Knowing that something I've designed might bring a little organisation, inspiration or happiness to someone else's teaching day is genuinely exciting.

Believe! The Return of Ted Lasso

And finally, a highlight that has nothing to do with lesson planning, marking or the school timetable.

Season four of Ted Lasso!

What an absolute joy to have this wonderful programme back on our screens.

There is something about Ted Lasso that feels like a warm hug after a particularly long day. The humour, the characters, the positivity and, most importantly, the reminder that kindness and belief can make a real difference.

In many ways, Ted Lasso has a lot to teach us about education. Building relationships matters. People thrive when they feel supported. Everyone has something valuable to contribute. And sometimes, believing in someone before they believe in themselves can be incredibly powerful.

I love that a television programme about football can offer so many reminders about leadership, teamwork and the importance of creating a positive culture.

And let's face it, a little Ted Lasso optimism is exactly what we all need when we're six weeks into the school year and the photocopier has decided it has had enough.

Half-Term: Time to Recharge

So there we have it. A half-term filled with exciting projects, new opportunities, lovely students, stationery happiness and a healthy dose of Ted Lasso wisdom.

There have been busy days, unexpected challenges and probably far too many moments where I've wondered how it's only Tuesday. But when I look back, what stands out most are the positives. The conversations, the creativity, the opportunities to learn and the little moments that remind me why I love being a teacher.

If there's one thing I'm taking away from this half-term, it's that we should make time to celebrate the wins, however big or small.

For now, though, it's time to switch off the alarm, recharge the batteries and perhaps indulge in a little more box set watching. Purely for educational purposes, obviously.

Here's to a restful half-term and another exciting few weeks ahead.

And in the words of the great Ted Lasso...

Believe! 💛

Happy half-term, everyone!
